Cloé Lacasse seems to love playing for SL Benfica and if something isn’t broken, why try to fix it?

The Canadian women’s national team forward is one of the most prolific attackers in European women’s soccer right now, and it’s only natural that she might be drawing admiring glances from elsewhere.

English Women’s Super League side Arsenal, who are thought to be in the market for a new striker, have been credited with an interest in Lacasse, who has been scoring at a rate of not far off a goal per game for the Portuguese giants since her move from Iceland in 2019.

However, after a week in which Lacasse scored four times in two games for Benfica, women’s soccer reporter Amanda Zaza reports that a move to North London is very unlikely to happen and that the 29-year-old from Sudbury, Ontario will be staying with Benfica.

It’s clear to see why WSL teams might be interested in Lacasse; she possesses many of the qualities of a great attacking player, including strong pace, good movement on and off the ball, and a natural finishing ability. She has hit new heights this season with remarkable scoring form in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where only one player has scored more than her five goals from six games in this season’s final tournament. Lacasse also netted two in the qualifying stage.

Much of the reasoning behind a move to Arsenal being a non-starter is likely to be that Lacasse is simply very happy at Benfica. For not, at least.

She recently expressed her gratitude to Benfica for giving her the opportunity to play for CanWNT.

“Benfica gave me a dream; they gave me my national team,” she said. “I wouldn’t have been seen by my national team if it wasn’t for Benfica… they allowed me to be recognized by my country, so Benfica has a special place in my heart for that because they allowed me to attain a dream.”
