Yes, you read that headline correctly. And if you’re of a certain age may have wondered what the defunct Toronto Blizzard had to do with the LA Derby. Nothing.

Major League Soccer’s headline fixture on ‘MLS is Back’ opening weekend, has been postponed because of a blizzard warning in Southern California.

A major storm battering the West Coast has forced the league to postpone the always dramatic fixture that was set to take place Saturday night at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

“Due to safety considerations resulting from inclement weather and forecasted thunderstorms in the Los Angeles area, Major League Soccer, the LA Galaxy and LAFC today announced that the 2023 MLS Regular Season match scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 25 between the LA Galaxy and LAFC at the Rose Bowl Stadium will be postponed to a later date,” read a a statement from the clubs.

It is the first blizzard warning in Los Angeles since 1989. Heavy rain and lightning strikes are also expected.

‘El Tráfico’ as the LA Derby is fittingly called, has been rescheduled for July 4.

The Rose Bowl was the Galaxy’s home until the club moved to Carson in 2003.

More than 70,000 tickets had been sold for the match Saturday night, putting it on course to potentially break MLS’ single-game attendance record of 74,479 set by Charlotte FC last March.

Earlier on Friday, MLS was forced to move the Portland Timbers clash versus Sporting Kansas City from Saturday to Monday because of dangerous weather in the Rose City.

Guess you won’t have to two screen later on Saturday night. The Vancouver Whitecaps can have your full attention.
