If there was one player CF Montréal didn’t want to get burned by Saturday night in Austin, it was Maxi Urruti.

The former Montréal Impact star now wears the Verde of Austin FC. Saturday night, deep in the heart of Texas, the Argentine scored the 25th match-winner of his MLS career. You’re probably thinking “damn, that’s a lot!” It is in fact the second-most among active players.

Urruti had just come on the pitch in the 76th minute, and in the 88th one-touched a headed pass from Jon Gallagher past Montréal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois to give the home side the goal that had been coming.

New manager Hernán Losada included a club record four homegrown players in his starting 11 Saturday night. Nathan Saliba, Mathieu Choinière and former Canadian Premier Leaguers Sean Rea and Sirois who has taken over the No.1 spot while James Pantemis recovers from injury.

And both ex-CPLers had highlight reel moments inside Austin’s high-pressure Q2 Stadium.

You’ve got to think the goals will come for Rea sooner rather than later. And with stellar passes like this feed, he should help Montréal actually create some goals as well.

CF Montréal visit Canadian international Jacob Shaffelburg’s Nashville SC next weekend.

Austin takes on Violette AC in their first-ever CONCACAF Champions League match on Tuesday in the Dominican Republic.
