Since winning Olympic gold in the summer of 2021, Janine Beckie has become one of the most impactful Canadian women’s national team players on and off the pitch.

Within an hour of the Portland Thorns breaking the news that Beckie had suffered a torn ACL in a pre-season friendly two days earlier, the Canadian star shared her own heartbroken message on social media.

Her CanWNT head coach and teammates were quick to highlight what a crushing blow Beckie’s injury is for the team, and the person that has worked tirelessly these last few months to be a voice and leader for all women’s soccer players.

Canada Soccer Hall of Famer and fellow CanWNT centurion Amy Walsh has been a vocal supporter of Beckie throughout the women’s team’s fight with the federation this year in the lead-up to this summer’s World Cup that Beckie will now miss.

Her former Women’s Super League club, Manchester City, and notably one of Beckie’s closest non-CanWNT friends, Lionesses star and European champion Alex Greenwood, were also quick to show their love and support.

On Friday, the Portland Thorns confirmed that Beckie will have surgery in the coming weeks and will conduct her rehabilitation with Portland’s sports medicine staff.
