If Jonathan David’s value rose by a few million every time he was involved in a transfer rumour, his inevitable exit in the summer would probably be a record-breaker.

The Canadian international has gone from a star in the making to a certified star this season, with 19 league goals in 28 appearances for LOSC Lille so far. Only Kylian Mbappé has been able to keep up with David’s goalscoring prowess, with the pair currently the joint top-scorers in Ligue 1.

While Premier League giants like Manchester United and Chelsea seemed to be leading the race to sign David, AC Milan have re-emerged as another top club interested in the Canadian’s services.

According to Tuttosport, the seven-time Champions League winners have made David a top transfer priority for the summer. Italian media have been linking him with Milan since the fall of 2022, and it looks like there may be a serious bid from Milan in the coming months.

The Italian giants have history with Lille. Rafael Leão joined Milan from the French side in 2019 followed by Mike Maignan’s arrival in 2021. Both of these players hit the ground running and are now among the best in their position.

So, it’s not surprising that Milan apparently want to make a third raid.

Besides, the team is lacking a quality centre-forward for the present future to dovetail with Leão. Olivier Giroud, who was vital in their Serie A triumph last season, turns 37 in September, and is far from a long-term option. Their other options like Divock Origi and Junior Messias are squad players at best.

So, adding a player of David’s calibre could be the answer for the present and the future.

His presence in the box could also help unlock Charles De Ketelaere’s full potential. The Belgian was the biggest signing for Milan this season but has struggled to make an impact, and having a lethal attack of Leão and David to feed could be the solution for his slow start.

The only problem for Milan, of course, is they are one of many. If they have locked in David as a target, they will have to be ready to pay the premium for the Lille star, who has already become a club icon. Earlier this season, David eclipsed Eden Hazard’s tally of 50 goals to become Lille’s outright top goalscorer in the 21st century. And he did it in 69 fewer games.

Given his form and his raw ability, it’s very obvious why David is a man in demand. Want him, Milan? Join the queue.
