They say the measurement of your impact is leaving a place better than you found it. Jonathan David will leave Lille a much better player than the one that showed up in northeast France at the peak of the pandemic.

Jonathan David scored his 20th Ligue 1 goal of the season on Sunday in LOSC Lille’s 2-1 win over Montpellier. It’s the first time he’s ever reached the 20-league-goal mark in a season in his professional career.

The Canadian international has scored nine goals at home in the top flight since returning from the World Cup with Canada. No other player in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more.

David is tied in the Ligue 1 scoring race with Paris Saint Germain’s World Cup-winning star Kylian Mbappé who bagged his 20th in PSG’s 3-1 win over Lens on Saturday.

Goal No. 20 was even more special as David is now just the fourth player to score 20 goals in a domestic league season for Lille in the 21st century. The Canadian joins a revered club that includes the likes of Moussa Sow, Nicolas Pépé and one Eden Hazard. Not bad company, is it?

Lille bought the Ottawa native from Belgian side Gent for €30 million ($44 million CAD) in the summer of 2020. He will absolutely be sold this summer for considerably more than that, and rumours on Sunday indicate Lille won’t settle for anything less than double what they paid for the Canadian.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Rémy Cabella scored the match-winning goal for Lille in the 72nd minute, two minutes after David scored.

Lille moved up to fifth place in the Ligue 1 table with the win to sit on 55 points from 16 wins, seven draws, and eight losses.
